In view of the ongoing ban on fireworks in Delhi during Diwali, Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday reiterated that the ban is not a matter of religion but is an effort to protect public health. At a press conference, the former Delhi Chief Minister highlighted that Diwali is essentially a festival of lights and pollution caused by fireworks has a lasting negative impact, especially on children.

Kejriwal said that the Supreme Court and the High Court are also saying that in view of pollution, we should not burn firecrackers, we should light lamps. It is not a festival of firecrackers but of lights. It’s not that we are doing anyone a favor. He said that whatever pollution will happen, our children will have to bear the brunt of it, hence there is nothing like Hindu-Muslim in this. Everyone’s life is important. Arvind Kejriwal also said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sent the salary and Diwali bonus to all the sanitation workers before the end of the month of October.
Kejriwal said that there is good news for the sanitation workers of Delhi. During the time of BJP, the sanitation workers had to protest for their salaries and did not get their salaries for 6 months. But not even once in two years did it happen that the sweepers did not receive their salaries on time. He said that now in the AAP government, the sanitation workers get their salaries in the first week of the month itself.
