Kerala: High Court orders investigation into Minister Cheriyan's alleged derogatory remarks on the Constitution

The Kerala High Court on Thursday ordered an inquiry against state Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian for “insulting” the Constitution at an event in July 2022.

The High Court also rejected the final police report, which had given a clean chit to the minister. The High Court also rejected the order of the magistrate court in which the final police report was accepted.

It said deficiencies were found in the initial investigation. The High Court also directed that a re-investigation should be conducted by the crime branch of the police. The High Court also said that the preliminary investigation was completed in a hurry.

This order of the court has come on a petition requesting to continue the investigation in the case. This speech had created a political storm in the state and the opposition had demanded Cherian’s resignation or his dismissal, which ultimately led to his resignation from the cabinet posts on July 6, 2022. He was later re-inducted into the cabinet.
