The NIA said Sunny Toronto and Lakhveer Singh contacted Sukhmeet Pal Singh to carry out the murder with the aim of reviving terrorism in India, especially Punjab. Sunny Toronto also contacted radicalized youth in Punjab like Inderjit Singh alias Inder for the murder of Sandhu. NIA said in its affidavit, the main objective of Khalistan Liberation Force is to create Khalistan through armed struggle.
The National Investigation Agency has told the Supreme Court that Canada-based operatives of the banned terrorist organization Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) conspired to murder a Shaurya Chakra awardee teacher in Punjab in 2020. There is a standoff between Canada and India over the investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Balwinder Singh Sandhu was shot dead outside his house in Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran district in October 2020. Sandhu was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his fight against terrorism in the state in the 1990s. In a 111-page affidavit, the NIA said the accused arrested in the case revealed that they were tasked to commit the crime by Canada-based Khalistan Liberation Force operatives Sukhmeet Pal Singh alias Sunny Toronto and Lakhveer.
Singh alias Rode is the nephew of deceased Khalistani separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Both Sunny Toronto and Lakhveer Singh have been named as accused in the NIA charge sheet and are shown as absconders. The counter-terrorism agency said the two conspired to dismantle “anti-Khalistan entities in India” as they believed they could revive the Khalistani movement by targeting them.
