Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is advocating making his fellow Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Pawar called a meeting with newly elected MLAs at his residence on Sunday, where they discussed the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra. According to sources, Eknath Shinde on Saturday staked claim to the post of Chief Minister citing the “Laadli Brahmin” scheme as one of the major driving forces behind the grand success of Mahayuti in Maharashtra. So, what was the reason behind Ajit Pawar’s decision to support Devendra Fadnavis as the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra?

Relations between Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde have deteriorated ever since the then joint Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress formed the government as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in 2019. The Shinde faction’s separation from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena in 2022 was due to Thackeray’s decision to give significant power in the state administration to Ajit Pawar. Thackeray’s low presence in the ministry allowed Ajit Pawar to dominate the bureaucracy. This led to rift between Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray, which eventually led to Shinde leaving the party and forming the government with the BJP. It was believed that when BJP brought Ajit Pawar into the grand alliance, Eknath Shinde initially Expressed uneasiness.

However, the final decision on who will be the next Chief Minister will be taken only after the joint meeting of senior leaders of Shinde Sena, NCP (Ajit Pawar) and BJP high command. In Maharashtra, the BJP dominated the race and won 132 of the 149 seats contested, while Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) got 57 and Ajit Pawar’s NCP got 41 seats.
