A 24-year-old man, who was arrested during a raid on a gambling den in Vikasnagar police station area of the capital, died in police custody. The family members of the deceased have accused the police of beating him to death.
However, in a statement issued late Saturday evening, the police claimed that the youth died of a heart attack. According to officials, after receiving information about gambling, a team of policemen raided Ambedkar Park in Sector 8 of Vikasnagar on Friday night.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Jitendra Kumar Dubey said on Saturday, “Two people including Aman Gautam (24) were arrested and detained.” The officer said, “Aman’s condition deteriorated while being taken to the police station.” She was taken to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
Upon hearing the news of Aman’s death, his family members protested and accused the police of beating him. The police denied these allegations and said that the cause of death would be determined through post-mortem investigation.
Police said in a statement issued late Saturday evening that “as per the post-mortem report conducted by a panel of three doctors, no visible injuries were found on his body.” According to the statement, he died of a heart attack. And legal action is being taken in the matter.
