Tension in Manipur, which has been witnessing ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities for the last one and a half years, has escalated recently with several incidents of violence. Ethnically diverse Jiribam, which had been largely untouched by the conflicts in the Imphal Valley and surrounding hills, experienced violence in June after the mutilated body of a farmer was found in a field.
On Thursday, the Center re-imposed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas of Manipur, including Jiribam. The Union Home Ministry stressed that the decision was taken in view of the “continued volatile situation” due to ongoing ethnic violence.
More than 200 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in ethnic clashes between the Meitei in the Imphal valley in the northeastern state and the Kuki-Jo groups based in the surrounding hills since May 3 last year.
