Prime Minister Narendra Modi today left for a five-day visit to Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana. In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said this would be his first visit to Nigeria, which is India’s close partner in the West African region. Modi said his visit would be an opportunity to take forward the strategic partnership, which is based on shared belief in democracy and pluralism. He expressed his eagerness to meet the Indian community in Nigeria as well as the Nigerians who have sent him welcome messages in Hindi.

Modi will also participate in the 19th G-20 summit as a Troika member. He highlighted that India’s successful presidency last year had transformed the G20 into a people’s G20 and put the priorities of the Global South on the agenda. Saying that Brazil has built on India’s legacy this year, Modi expressed hope for meaningful discussions in line with the vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future”.
The Prime Minister said he would also use the opportunity to engage in discussions with several other world leaders on furthering bilateral cooperation. Modi said his visit to Guyana at the invitation of President Mohammed Irfan Ali would be the first by an Indian Prime Minister in more than 50 years. During the meeting, the two leaders will exchange views on giving strategic direction to their unique relationship, which is based on shared heritage, culture and values.

Modi will also pay his respects to one of the oldest Indian immigrants, who migrated more than 185 years ago, and connect with a fellow democrat while addressing his Parliament. During the visit, the Prime Minister will also join leaders of Caribbean partner countries for the second India-CARICOM Summit. Mr Modi said the summit will enable these countries to renew historical ties and expand cooperation into new areas.
