Rajat Sharma's Blog | Misbehavior with women during election campaign: Enough is enough now

Shaina NC, who is contesting elections on Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena ticket in Mumbai, has accused Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant of making lewd remarks. After this, Shayna lodged an FIR against Arvind Sawant at Nagpada police station in Mumbai. A case has been registered against Sawant under sections of intentionally insulting the modesty of a woman, insulting, intimidating and defaming. Actually, Arvind Sawant was filing nomination from Congress candidate Amin Patel from Mumba Devi seat. Talking to reporters, Arvind Sawant said that Shayna NC, who is contesting from Mumba Devi on Shiv Sena ticket, is an outside candidate and is an ‘imported product’. Controversy arose regarding this statement.

Shayna said that Arvind Sawant’s comment shows how he thinks about women. Sawant’s statement is not only an insult to him personally, but an insult to all women, no one will tolerate it. Shaina said other Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders, Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, have not yet condemned the remarks. Shayna said that she will not forgive Sawant until he comes to the police station and apologizes to her. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that it is not the character of Shiv Sainiks to say such things against women, if Balasaheb Thackeray was alive, he would have broken the mouth of the person making the statement. Shinde said that women will answer Sawant’s statement to Mahavikas Aghadi in the elections.

Arvind Sawant says that he considers Shayna NC as a friend and he did not take anyone’s name. To spin the issue, Sawant mentioned Manipur and cited statements from Prajjwal Revanna to Ashish Shelar in Karnataka. Arvind Sawant knows very well what he said and to whom he said it. Now he is increasing his bad language by talking here and there. It would have been better if he had not tried to justify his statement. They used indecency and misbehaved with Shayna NC by calling her an imported product. It is possible that a mistake may have been made, the tongue may have slipped, he could have ended this matter by apologizing.

No one becomes small by asking for forgiveness. But some leaders have a habit of considering women who enter politics as second class citizens. Just a few days ago, on October 25, Jharkhand Congress minister Irfan Ansari had called BJP candidate Sita Soren “rejected goods”. Sita Soren is the wife of JMM founder Shibu Soren’s elder son Durga Soren. Her husband died in 2009. Sita Soren left JMM and joined BJP and is contesting elections from Jamtara. BJP leaders went to the Governor and demanded that Irfan Ansari be dismissed from the cabinet and he be banned from contesting elections.

Making lewd comments about women leaders active in politics is not justified in any way. In Jharkhand, Sita Soren was called ‘rejected goods’ and in Maharashtra, Shaina NC was called ‘imported goods’. Such language cannot be justified at all for a woman. This is an insult to women. Any such action is unforgivable. (Rajat Sharma)
