Fifty people fell ill after eating momos from a roadside stall in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills. Apart from this, a 31-year-old woman died allegedly after eating momos. Police reports reveal that all ten victims ate momos prepared by the same vendor. According to the police, the woman and others had eaten momos from a food stall named ‘Delhi Momos’. This stall located in Chintal Basti was set up about three months ago by six people who had come from Bihar. Police said that the stall owners have been taken into custody.
Momos took Reshma’s life
Last week, a woman died after eating momos at a roadside stall in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills. At least 50 other people from the colony along with his two minor daughters were admitted to the hospital. The woman died on Monday, while the others are undergoing treatment in different hospitals. According to the police, Reshma Begum (31) and her daughters, aged 12 and 14, had eaten momos from a street vendor on October 25. Soon after, all three started showing symptoms of severe food poisoning – vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. He did not go to the hospital immediately, thinking that some rest would make him feel better. A local man, while speaking to reporters, claimed that the woman started showing symptoms of food poisoning an hour after eating breakfast. He said that the woman died at around 8.30 am on Monday. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started a probe into the operations of the vendor. Food safety officials, with the assistance of police, traced the stall and found that it was running without a valid license.
Case of culpable homicide registered
A police officer said on October 27, when his condition started deteriorating, he was taken to the hospital. Reshma died on the way to the hospital, while her two daughters are still undergoing treatment. Police registered a case of culpable homicide and detained two people from Bihar who were running this business. During the investigation, police found that at least 20 other residents from nearby areas were admitted to the hospital with similar complaints – all of them had eaten momos from the same stall.
The food was being prepared in unhygienic conditions
Food safety officials conducted the inspection and found that the establishment was running without the mandatory FSSAI license and the food was being prepared in unhygienic conditions. “We have collected samples of food items found at the spot and sent them to the state food laboratory for analysis. We have also issued orders to stop operations. Blood culture and stool test reports of the victims have been collected So that the exact cause of food poisoning can be found out,” said a food safety official. “We have also written to the SHO of Banjara Hills police station to investigate and take necessary action against the accused,” he said.
