By-election date changed

New Delhi: The date of by-elections in UP, Punjab and Kerala has changed. Now these elections will be held on 20th November. Earlier these elections were to be held on 13 November.

Why was the decision taken?

By-elections to assembly constituencies in Kerala, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh have been rescheduled to November 20 instead of November 13 due to various festivals. Actually, this decision has been taken on the request of Congress, BJP, BSP, RLD and other national and state parties.

To rule out any possibility of low turnout due to various festivals, the Election Commission has taken this decision. In such a situation, it is clear that now the by-elections in UP, Punjab and Kerala will be held on 20 November instead of 13 November.

What had the Election Commission announced earlier?

When the Election Commission announced the dates of Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections, at the same time it also announced the dates of by-elections. Elections will be held in Maharashtra on November 20 and counting of votes will take place on November 23. Elections will be held in Maharashtra in a single phase. Whereas in Jharkhand, voting will be held on 13th and 20th November and the results will come only on 23rd November. Elections will be held in Jharkhand in 2 phases.

By-elections on the seats of Kerala, Punjab and UP were to be held on 13 November but now these elections will be held on 20 November.

However, the by-election on Milkipur seat of Ayodhya was stopped. The reason given was an election petition. Former MLA Gorakhnath Baba had filed a petition for SP candidate Awadhesh Prasad to win the election after losing in the 2022 assembly elections, due to which the by-election on this seat was stopped.

Overall, the dates have been changed by the Election Commission so that the voting percentage is not affected and people do not shy away from voting due to festivals.
