Waqf Bill: Controversy broke out again in JPC meeting, opposition leaders walked out
Several opposition leaders on Monday walked out of the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill to register their protest against the bill introduced by the Delhi Waqf Board. The walkout members said that the Delhi Waqf Board administrator, who appeared before the panel, made changes in the presentation without the knowledge of the Delhi government. Those who walked out of the meeting included AAP MP Sanjay Singh, DMK’s Mohammad Abdullah, Congress’s Naseer Hussain and Mohammad Javed.

He claimed that MCD Commissioner and Delhi Waqf Board Administrator Ashwini Kumar made changes in the preliminary report of the Waqf Board without the approval of Chief Minister Atishi. The meeting was presided over by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal. The committee had called representatives of Delhi Waqf Board, Haryana Waqf Board, Punjab Waqf Board and Uttarakhand Waqf Board to record oral evidence on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

In the last meeting held on October 22, there was a heated debate between BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay and TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee in the panel meeting. Banerjee allegedly threw a glass bottle in anger and later allegedly threw the glass towards Pal. His hand got injured in the process. The TMC MP was later barred from attending a JPC meeting. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 seeks to bring comprehensive reforms, including digitalisation, strict audit, transparency and introducing legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied properties.
