We must protect the uniqueness of indigenous communities and the rights of old inhabitants: Biren Singh
Imphal . Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed satisfaction over the resolution passed at the Thadau conference, which expressed support for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the state’s “war on drugs” campaign. Singh also stressed that his government would not compromise its policies by involving outsiders in the name of bringing peace. At a conference held in Guwahati last week, the Thadau tribe had expressed support for the NRC and the state’s “war on drugs” campaign. Thadou is the largest tribe in the Kuki community.
However, during the recent conference the community stressed, “The Thadou are a distinct ethnic group of people, with their own distinct language, culture, traditions and great history. Thadou Community is neither a cookie, nor subject to, nor part of, a cookie. It is an independent community separate from Cookie.” On the occasion of the launch of the Chief Minister Coaching Scheme for entrance examinations related to professional courses, Singh said, “Peace will definitely be restored. Thadou is one of the oldest tribes in the state. “This stance has been welcomed and appreciated by many civil society organizations in the state after expressing support for NRC and the anti-narcotics campaign at the Thadau conference.”
Singh said, “We cannot compromise on our policies in the name of peace. Under the guise of inclusivity, we cannot give place to every outsider in our country. We must protect the distinctiveness of our indigenous communities and the rights of our former inhabitants. In pursuit of this objective we have had to face many challenges. We should also not forget that we are Indians.”
Talking about the coaching scheme, Singh said that its aim is to prepare the students of Manipur to appear in nationally conducted entrance examinations like JEE (Mains/Advanced) and NEET for admission to professional courses. He said, “Educated, literate people are less likely to get involved in conflict and will maintain decency in their speech and actions. It is our collective duty to protect the unity and integrity of India. We must understand the rights guaranteed under the Constitution.” Singh said that there will be an examination at the end of the coaching course, which will be conducted in March or April. He said that the state government will bear the expenses of further education of all the students who qualify the examination.
