Corona virus outbreak has started affecting sports events badly. Many sports competitions and Olympic-related tournaments have been postponed or canceled. There are constant speculations as to whether the Tokyo Olympics will be held as per the pre-scheduled scheduled between July 24 and August 9 this year. However, the organizers have insisted that these games will be according to the pre-determined schedule. The final decision in this regard has to be taken by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which says that till now there has been no talk about cancellation or postponement of these games. At the same time, US President Donald Trump has suggested that the 2020 Olympics in Japan should be postponed by one year.
‘This is embarrassing’
Donald Trump said on Thursday that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics could be postponed by a year. “They (Tokyo Olympics) should postpone them for a year,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office. He said, ‘This is embarrassing. But it would be better than holding it in an empty stadium. Explain that the outbreak of the corona virus started in China, after which it has spread worldwide. More than one million cases of corona virus have been confirmed worldwide.
On Trump remarks, Japan government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said that Japan is on track to hold the Olympics. “I am aware of President Trump comments, but we are working together in Tokyo to prepare for the IOC (International Olympic Committee), the Organizing Committee and the Games,” Suga told reporters on Friday.
What did the Olympic minister say
The Olympic Minister of Japan recently said that the contract for organizing the Games stated that the Games can be held only during 2020. Seiko Hashimoto said in response to a question in the High House of the Japanese Parliament that if the Olympics do not start on July 24 as per the pre-determined schedule then they can be held later in the year.
Hashimoto said in Parliament, “If the Games are not held during the year 2020, then the IOC can only postpone the Games.” This means that games can be postponed only if they are not held during the calendar year. At the same time, Tokyo City Governor Yuriko Koike said on Thursday that the cancellation of the 2020 Olympics is ‘unimaginable’ but that the Games are likely to have some effect after the corona virus is declared an epidemic.
