The Indian women’s and men’s chess team created a new history by winning the gold medal in the 45th Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. This was the first time in Indian chess history that such success was achieved in Chess Olympiad. Vidit Gujarathi, in a special conversation with India TV, revealed that he initially wanted to become a cricketer but later when his interest in chess increased, he made it his career. Vidit told that he was very mischievous in his childhood and that is why his parents wanted him to engage in some sports. So they took me for cricket first but I was very young at that time and they asked me to stay for one more year. Then I thought that I should play chess because I used to play with my father but lost, but the thought was that I will learn and win, then there was an accident which started it and here I am in the team now and what better story than this. Might be possible.
Regarding the victory in Chess Olympiad, Vidit said that we were the second seat team among 189 or more countries in this tournament, due to which the expectations of the people had also increased a lot. We had never won a gold medal before and this time the team was very young and everyone’s form was excellent. Initially we did not think so much but after winning the first 4 matches, we took a very good lead in the third round after falling behind like America and then we felt that we can win the gold medal this time.
Divya started playing chess at the age of 5
18 year old Divya Deshmukh, a member of the Indian women’s team in the Chess Olympiad, also told in a special conversation with India TV that she started playing chess at the age of 5, after which her Chess Olympiad journey started at the age of 16. Started in which she was a part of India B team where I won individual bronze medal. Now, as soon as we made our debut with the senior team, we were successful in winning the gold medal. It is because of many years of hard work that we were able to win the gold medal in the Olympiad which includes the cooperation of all the coaches and support staff.
