2007 T20 World Cup: Whenever we talk about the most successful captain of Indian cricket, the first name that comes to mind is Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The reason is also clear because Dhoni has the record of winning the most ICC trophies for Team India under his captaincy. Dhoni is the only captain in the world who has won all three ICC trophies in limited overs cricket i.e. ICC T20 World Cup, ICC ODI World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy.
Dhoni got the captaincy of Team India at a time when Indian cricket was going through its worst phase. In the 2007 ODI World Cup, the Indian team had to face defeat at the hands of Bangladesh and had to be eliminated from the group stage itself. This defeat plunged not only Team India but all Indian cricket fans into deep disappointment. What happened after this is recorded in history. Dhoni got the captaincy of Team India after the shameful performance in the 2007 World Cup. At that time, Dhoni had a heavy burden of responsibility on his shoulders but he took full advantage of this opportunity and surprised the cricket world by making India the champion of the first T20 World Cup. It was today when the Dhoni era began in Indian cricket.
History was made 17 years ago
In fact, on 24 September 2007, Team India became the T20 World Champion for the first time. 17 years ago, Team India won the title by defeating Pakistan in the T20 World Cup final played in Johannesburg, South Africa. This historic victory brought Dhoni to the level of the great captain Kapil Dev in Indian cricket and then made him the most successful captain of Team India in the next few years.
In the T20 World Cup, Dhoni’s team defeated Pakistan twice. After the match was tied in the first group stage, Team India won 3-0 in the bowl-out and then won the title by winning the final match by 5 runs in a thrilling manner. After the T20 World Cup, under Dhoni’s captaincy, India managed to win the 50-over World Cup title at home after 28 years. After this, under Dhoni’s leadership, Team India became the champion in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
