The Cricket Board of West Indies i.e. Cricket West Indies (CWI) has taken a big step in the interest of the players. West Indies Cricket has announced to give multi-year contracts to its players for the first time. The West Indies board has said that for the first time it has offered multi-year contract contracts to its top men and women players for the next two years.
The central contracts include 15 men’s players and the same number of women’s players, with senior players like Deandra Dottin and Roston Chase returning. This historic announcement follows the signing of a new four-year MOU between CWI and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) in January 2024. This time the contract covers 15 senior men’s players, out of which 6 players have been offered multi-year contracts based on their performance during the 2023-2024 evaluation period. Of the 15 senior women players contracted, three have been given multi-year contracts.
Many big names missing from central contract
ODI captain Shay Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Moti and Jaden Seales are the six male players who have been given multi-year contracts. On the other hand, Shameen Campbell, Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor are the three women players who have got multi-year contracts. Batsman Kaveem Hodge and all-rounder Ashmini Munisar have won their first central contracts.
The thing to note here is that former captains Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder have not been included in the central contract. Experienced all-rounder Andre Russell has also not got a place in the central contract. The one-year central contract period is from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025, while players with multi-year contracts will have their contract period from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2026.
