Beijing/Hong Kong: The ordeal of a 22-year-old woman in China has become a topic of discussion on social media these days. The woman told how she was trapped in the country’s illegal surrogacy trade and then had an abortion. What happened to the woman is now viral on social media. After this incident, a debate regarding women’s rights has started in Chinese social media.
What did the woman say?
Zhang Jing, 22, who lives in China, told Phoenix TV magazine that she was short of money. Due to lack of money, she donated her eggs and then agreed to “rent her uterus” for pregnancy for 30,000 yuan. She was told that if she “successfully” delivered the baby, she would be paid a total of 240,000 yuan. According to Zhang Jing, when she was five months pregnant, she suffered serious complications that led to an abortion.
Video went viral
Zhang Jing’s video quickly went viral on social media in China, garnering more than 86 million views on Weibo. It received 10,000 comments, with the hashtag “#2000s-born Surrogate Miscarriage Girl Speaks Out#”. Most comments strongly opposed surrogacy, with some even warning against it.

One user wrote, “If surrogacy is legalized no woman will be able to escape it”, while another said, “Legalizing surrogacy will bring down prices and women will become commodities.” One user wrote, “Life should not be sold like a commodity.” “If this extends to organ selling, it will become even more deadly, women will have no future.”
