It has been “Trump and circumstance” at the US president’s second state visit says Metro, with “1500 troops, gun salute, flypasts bands and jokes with Charles” laid on as the public were “kept away”.
The Daily Express is dominated by a full-page photo of President Trump and First Lady Melania grinning next to the King and Queen at the state banquet. “My respect for you and Britain” reads the headline of its only front page story.
The Sun mirrors The Express with a full-page spread of the same shot, captioning it “the special bond” as the “prez hails UK at banquet… and band plays 007”.
The Guardian also leads with the state visit, writing “PM banks on £150bn investment to placate critics of Trump visit”. A poem to mark the occasion by the former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy accompanies the piece.
The Times leads with “We are kin, King tells Trump”, adding that the president was “delighted by pomp”. And in immigration news, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood “demands slavery law review after deportations blocked”. The paper says she blamed “vexatious last-minute claims” for the failure to remove any migrants to France this week.
The Daily Telegraph also features the image of the royals with their American guests, but leads with the news that the “one in, one out” deal has been “blocked by Home Office-backed charity”. The paper says Bail for Immigration Detainees has produced a “legal guide to avoid deportation”. A spokesperson for the charity denied it was helping people “beat the system” and said it provides legal advice.
It is “day two of Starmer’s delicious humiliation on human rights” reads the front page the Daily Mail as the “Home Secretary blasts lefty lawyers!” An image of Catherine, Princess of Wales also makes the Mail’s front page who “glitters in a gold lace gown” as the tabloid promises the “inside story from day Trump got the royal treatment”.
The i Paper dubs the monarch the “diplomat King” as it says he “urges Trump to stand up to Putin tyranny”. Meanwhile, there were “no migrants on deportation flight for third day”.
The Financial Times leads with the US Federal Reserve’s cuts to interest rates, saying the “action follows Trump ire”. A photo of President Trump strolling through a line of bearskin-wearing soldiers with King Charles III not far behind illustrates the “day of pomp and protests”.
The Daily Star takes a jab at Trump with “keep yer wig on orange manbaby” as the president’s hair is snapped blowing in a breeze. Also on the tabloid’s front, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is “out of jail” where he had been serving a sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old woman. Christian Brückner has never been charged with any crime in relation to the McCann case. He denies any involvement.
The Mirror leads on the story of the “Maddie suspect freed” with a picture of Brückner smoking as he’s “back on the streets”. The “rapist enjoys crisps and burger after his release”, it writes.
