BSNL has been in the news for the last few months. In July, after the plans of private telecom companies became expensive, lakhs of users had ported their numbers to BSNL’s network. The main reason for this is that the recharge plans of the government telecom company are 40 to 60 percent cheaper than those of Airtel, Jio and Vi. Users who have ported their numbers to BSNL are once again switching to their old operators. According to a recent report, most of the users were troubled due to the poor network quality of the public sector telecom company.
Withdrawal of users who had done MNP
According to the rules of MNP, if a user changes his telecom operator, he can switch to the new or old operators only after 90 days. Most of the users who ported their numbers in July have returned to their old telecom operator after completion of 90 days. According to TRAI report, BSNL has added more than 55 lakh new users to its network in the last three months. Most of these users were connected to BSNL’s network using MNP i.e. Mobile Number Portability.
Bad network created divide
BSNL had the highest number of mobile users in the 2000s. Due to the easy availability of connections from private telecom operators, the number of BSNL users gradually decreased. Due to lack of 4G service of BSNL, connectivity problems started and except some telecom circles, the users of the government telecom company are only 2 to 4 percent. However, the government has announced a fund of more than Rs 80 thousand crore to revive BSNL this year.
The company has decided to install 1 lakh new 4G/5G towers to improve network connectivity. So far, more than 50 thousand new 4G towers have been installed. Despite this, users are facing problems in network connectivity. Due to this, the users who ported to BSNL network are also coming back to their old network. According to the report released by IIFL Securities on December 6, most of the users living in villages and small towns are returning to the old operators.
