Dhaka: A Bangladesh court has refused to hear the bail plea of Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das arrested in a treason case. The court said that the hearing will be held on the already fixed date of January 2 only. Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Saif-ul Islam rejected the petition because the lawyer who filed the petition seeking advance hearing did not have a power of attorney on behalf of the saint, court officials said.
The lawyer did not have a power of attorney
“Lawyer Ravindra Ghosh requested for advance hearing after another lawyer told the judge that he (Ghosh) did not have any power of attorney to represent the saint,” a court official said. After this the judge rejected the petition.
Das is suffering from diseases
Ghosh, in his petition, said Das has been arrested in a “false and fabricated case” even though he is suffering from diabetes, asthma and other ailments. However, the lawyer admitted that he had not gone to jail to obtain the signature on the Vakalatnaam from Das. “I will now meet Chinmay in jail and get the Vakalatnama (power of attorney),” he said.
Chinmoy Krishna Das
accused of treason
Das, a former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was arrested on November 25 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The next day a Chittagong court sent him to jail. The court rejected his bail plea as he has been charged with sedition for allegedly insulting the country’s flag. (Language)
