Sao Paulo: Brazilian police have arrested five officials accused of plotting to overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and planning to assassinate him after the 2022 elections. Officials said that the arrested accused include four army officers and one police officer. He said that the investigation has revealed that the coup plotters had also planned to kill Vice President Geraldo Alcmin and Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes.

According to police, five arrest warrants have been executed and three search and seizure warrants have been issued, as well as other measures, including confiscating the suspects’ passports and preventing them from contacting others.

Justice Moraes, who ordered the arrest, said police investigations had revealed that military personnel trained in the army’s special forces and a retired high-ranking officer were involved in the coup plot. “The aim of the conspirators was to prevent the legitimately elected government from taking oath and to weaken democracy and the judiciary,” he said.
