China's tension is going to increase, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi reached Japan on his first foreign tour, why is Tokyo's visit important
General Upendra Dwivedi reached Japan in his first foreign tour as Army Chief. This visit is till 17th October. This visit is important in view of the ever-growing partnership between India and Japan to deal with China. However, earlier Army Chiefs have been visiting neighboring countries on their first foreign tour. Indian Army said that General Dwivedi’s convoy has reached Japan. General Upendra’s visit is an important step towards strengthening defense cooperation between India and Japan Dwivedi. The Army Chief will discuss India-Japan relations at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo. At the same time, he will communicate with senior officers of the Japanese Army. The objective of these discussions will be to strengthen military cooperation between India and Japan.

This visit assumes great significance in view of the growing partnership between India and Japan, especially to counter the growing influence of China. The Japanese Navy is currently conducting joint naval exercises with the Indian Navy in the Bay of Bengal as part of the Malabar exercise. Just two months ago, Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Defense Minister Kihara Minoru visited India for the 2+2 Dialogue, where discussions on the Indo-Pacific region were the main focus. Both India and Japan are important players in the Indo-Pacific region. The Governments of both the countries have reiterated that in the current global environment, it is essential to strengthen the India-Japan defense partnership to ensure a free, open, inclusive and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi’s command appointments include command of Regiment (18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), DIG, Assam Rifles (East) and 9 Corps. Before being appointed as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff, he has also held important appointments including Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief (HQ Northern Command) from 2022-2024.
