It confirmed the deaths of 11 people but said the number was expected to rise. Mayotte, located in the south-eastern Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, is the poorest island territory of France and the poorest region of the European Union.

The number of people who lost their lives due to cyclone ‘Chido’ in the Mayotte region of France may be around 1,000. A top government official gave this information on Sunday. “I think hundreds of people have been killed, maybe the number reaches around a thousand,” Mayotte prefect Francois-Xavier Beauville told TV channel Mayotte L’A1ere.

He said that it is ‘extremely difficult’ to give exact numbers after the widespread devastation caused by the severe tropical cyclone that hit the Indian Ocean islands on Saturday.

Authorities had confirmed at least 11 deaths in Mayotte earlier on Sunday but said the number was expected to rise. Mayotte, located in the south-eastern Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, is the poorest island territory of France and the poorest region of the European Union.
