A major accident occurred in the African country Ethiopia on Sunday. In the accident, a truck fell from the bridge into the river below. In which 71 people died. In this accident, 64 people died on the spot. While the rest died in the hospital. According to ANI, the people in the truck were going to attend a wedding ceremony. The truck was old and in dilapidated condition. The truck lost its balance while crossing the bridge and fell into the river below. Regarding the accident, local people said that many accidents have happened in this area before. People also said that the condition of the bridge and surrounding roads is very bad. He had earlier also appealed to the administration to repair this place but no action was taken.
Late start of relief and rescue operation
After this accident, relief and rescue work was also started quite late. Which made the matter even more serious. The injured did not get immediate help, due to which the death toll increased further. Patients seriously injured in the accident were sent to big hospitals for better treatment. The celebration of the wedding ceremony quickly turned into mourning. This accident has exposed shortcomings in road safety, emergency services and construction in Ethiopia. This incident has become a deep tragedy not only for the families of the dead and injured but for the entire country.
1,358 people died in road accidents in the last six months
The Ethiopian government reported on February 28 this year that at least 1,358 people had died in traffic accidents in Ethiopia in the past six months. Selamawit Kassa, the Ethiopian government’s minister of state for communications services, told reporters that the deadly road accidents have caused serious concern in the East African country of Ethiopia. In addition to the dead, 2,672 people were seriously injured in road accidents in the first six months of the 2023-2024 Ethiopian fiscal year, which began July 8, 2023, CASA said. This caused a loss to the country of more than 1.9 billion Ethiopian Birr (about 33 million dollars). According to CASA, drivers were responsible for more than 60 percent of road accidents in the country.
