Paris: France’s highest court, the ‘Court of Cassation’, has upheld the appeal court’s decision in which former President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption while serving as head of state. The court said in a statement that the conviction and sentence are upheld. Sarkozy (69) was sentenced to one year in prison. They have the right to ask to be placed under house arrest during which they will be fitted with an ‘electronic bracelet’. This happens in cases with a punishment of two years or less.
President of France from 2007 to 2012
Former President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption by a Paris court in 2021 and an appeals court in 2023. He had tried to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information about a legal case in which he was involved. Sarkozy was the President of France from 2007 to 2012. It is the first time in the modern history of France that a former president has been convicted and sentenced to prison for actions taken during his tenure.
Sarkozy declared himself innocent
“I will fulfill my responsibilities and face all the consequences,” Nicolas Sarkozy said in a statement posted on the social media platform X. “I have no intention of complaining,” the former president said. But I am not ready to accept the grave injustice done to me.” Sarkozy said he would try to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights. He again reiterated that he is innocent. Sarkozy has also been involved in several other legal cases, in which he has denied any wrongdoing. (AP)
