Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in connection with protests, hours after he was granted bail in an alleged corruption case. With this new arrest the possibility of Khan’s release has ended.
Expectations of his release had increased after the Islamabad High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Khan in another case related to Toshakhana. The case pertains to the purchase of an expensive Bulgari jewelery set at a throwaway price.
Hours after he got bail from the Islamabad High Court, Rawalpindi police arrested Khan late last night in connection with a case registered at New Town police station on terrorism and other charges.
Police alleged that Khan had called for protests in Rawalpindi on September 28 while imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. Dawn newspaper quoted a police spokesperson as saying that Khan has been detained in the case registered on September 28 and a team has been assigned the task of investigating the allegations.
Even before his formal arrest in the case, Federal Information Minister A Tarar had ruled out the possibility of his release by saying that Khan is wanted in eight cases related to the May 9, 2023 violence and he will have to face trial in all the cases before being released from jail. Bail will have to be taken.
