The infrastructure of nine Bagan schools identified by the Government of Sri Lanka is envisaged to be upgraded.
Colombo. India has doubled its grant to Rs 17 crore 22 lakh 50 for the purpose of promoting education in the plantation areas of the Indian origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka. Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha and J M Thilaka Jayasundara, Secretary of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Education and Science and Technology, signed and exchanged diplomatic letters on Friday to formalize the grant.
Jha said, “This project envisages upgradation of infrastructure of nine Bagan schools identified by the Government of Sri Lanka. This includes six schools in the plantation areas of the Central Province and one school each in Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Southern Province. This additional funding was given at the request of the Government of Sri Lanka and with this, India’s total commitment to this project now stands at 60. Crore Sri Lankan Rupees (17 Crore 22 Lakh 50 Indian Rupees). This project is part of India’s many past and present development partnership initiatives in Sri Lanka in the important sector of education.
