There has been a flurry of diplomatic engagements in the past few days to reach an agreement on a proposed ceasefire and hostage release after months of deadlock in talks between the two sides. About 95 hostages are reportedly in Hamas custody in Gaza.

Assad fled to Russia after rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured Damascus, ending his family’s 50-year rule. In its response, India advocated a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process in that country. “We underline the need for all parties to work towards preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on December 9.
