Seoul. North Korea has tested explosive drones designed to deliver precision strikes on targets, while leader Kim Jong Un has called for the mass production of these weapons to be accelerated. The country conducted the test at a time when the US, South Korea and Japan are conducting joint military exercises with advanced fighter jets and an American aircraft carrier in nearby international waters. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) published some photos in which Kim is seen talking to officials near at least two different types of unmanned aerial vehicles.
These include craft with an ‘X’-shaped tail and wings that appear to resemble drones the country unveiled in August when Kim inspected another display of exploding drones. KCNA reported that the drones flew different routes and accurately hit the targets. In its pictures, it appeared that the drone was targeting old models of BMW sedans and tanks.
Kim expressed satisfaction with the process of developing the weapons and stressed the need to “build a series production system as soon as possible and carry out mass production.” Kim explained how drones are becoming important in modern warfare. KCNA echoed Kim’s words, saying drones are easy to manufacture at low cost for many military activities. North Korea accused South Korea of sending drones to drop anti-North Korea leaflets last month and threatened to respond with force if it did so again. South Korea’s military has refused to confirm whether North Korea’s claims are true or not.
