Padang. One of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes erupted Sunday at least three times, spewing ash and debris across nearby villages. However, no casualties have been reported. Eruptions at Mount Marapi, located in the Agam district of West Sumatra province, are difficult to predict because they are not caused by deep movements of magma, but by geological shocks.

Ahmad Rifandi, an official at Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center at the Marapi monitoring post, said the hot lava that erupted from it spread for several miles. The explosion raised clouds of ash up to a height of 2,000 meters. Rifandi said the approximately 2,900-meter-high volcano remains at the second-highest of four alert levels since January. Mountaineers and villagers have been banned from going within three km of the mouth of the volcano.

Mount Marapi suddenly erupted in December 2023, killing 24 climbers and injuring many others. Since then, two climbing routes of the mountain have been closed. Five months before this, the flow of mud and cooled lava from Mount Marapi during monsoon rains caused flooding in the rivers. In this incident, many people’s houses were washed away and 67 people died. The island nation of Indonesia is vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity, as it lies on the “Ring of Fire” seismic zone around the Pacific Ocean.
