Colombia: Inmate Freddie Owens was put to death by lethal injection in South Carolina. This is the first such execution in the state after 13 years because prison officials did not have the drugs needed for the injection. Owens (46) was pronounced dead at 6:55 pm on Friday. Owens was convicted of killing a man during a robbery at a store in Greenville in 1997. While in prison, he also killed an inmate in the county jail. He was sentenced to death in this case.
Know what happened
Owens did not make any final statement before his death. He ate two cheeseburgers, French fries, ribeye steak, chicken wings, two strawberry sodas and a slice of apple pie before being injected. Owens was tied up after being taken to the injection room. Meanwhile, he said goodbye to his lawyer. He smiled a little but his facial expression did not change much. About a minute after the injection, he fainted, then his eyes closed. His face kept moving for four or five minutes, then the movements stopped. According to the information, five other prisoners in the jail are also to be given death sentence.
Trying to escape punishment
Freddie Owens tried his best to escape the punishment but his last appeal was also rejected. Owens also filed a petition in the Supreme Court to stay the sentence. After Owens’ petition, the Governor of Carolina also filed a reply in which the court was appealed to reject Owens’ petition. Owens’ last chance to avoid the death penalty depended on the stance of Republican South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. McMaster could have changed his sentence to life imprisonment but he rejected Owens’ request. The Governor said that he has considered Owens’ request. (AP)
