The vacancies in the Rajya Sabha include the seat vacated by Venkataraman Rao who resigned in August this year, Beedha Mastan Rao who also resigned in August and Raiga Krishnaiah who resigned in September.

The Election Commission of India on Monday released the notification for 6 vacant seats of Rajya Sabha. Elections for the Upper House will be held on December 20 and the results will also be declared on the same day. Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Haryana will elect six members to the Rajya Sabha. The vacancies in the Rajya Sabha include the seat vacated by Venkataraman Rao who resigned in August this year, Beedha Mastan Rao who also resigned in August and Raiga Krishnaiah who resigned in September.

The tenure of Venkatraman Rao from Andhra Pradesh will end in June 2024, while the tenure of Mastan Rai and Krishnaiah from Andhra Pradesh will end in June 2028. The tenure of Sujit Kumar, who resigned in September, will end in April 2026. Kumar was a Rajya Sabha member from Odisha. Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal Jawahar Sarkar had resigned in September. His tenure was till April 2026. Rajya Sabha member from Haryana Krishna Lal Panwar had resigned in October. His tenure was to continue till August 2028.

Rajya Sabha MPs are elected by the MLAs in the states through the proportional representation process with the single transferable vote (STV) system. MLAs do not vote for every seat. Instead, MLAs will have to list different candidates in order of their preference. Therefore, getting elected to the Rajya Sabha will depend on the number of MLAs of a particular party in the state. However, it could take a turn if MLAs cross-vote, as happened in Himachal Pradesh in February.
