Chief Justice Chandrachud, who assumed charge on November 9, 2022, bid farewell to the judicial service after the end of his two-year tenure. He recalled and shared a light-hearted moment with his Registrar Judicial the previous evening. He said that when my Registrar Judicial asked me what time the ceremony should start, I said 2 pm, thinking that this would allow us to settle a lot of pending issues. But I thought to myself – would anyone really be here at 2pm on a Friday?
He reflected on his judicial career and described the role of judges as akin to pilgrims who come to court every day with a commitment to serve. He said that the work we do can make or break matters. If I have ever hurt anyone in the court, please forgive me for that. He quoted the Jain phrase “Michhami Dukkadam”, which translates to “May all my mistakes be forgiven.”
