Rights activist Irom Sharmila, known for leading the world’s largest fast, on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention is necessary to resolve the prolonged violence that has been burning Manipur since May last year. He said that ‘PM Modi’s intervention is necessary to resolve the crisis in violence-hit Manipur. This statement of Sharmila has come amid the latest wave of violence in caste conflict affected Manipur. On 11 November, Manipur Police claimed that 10 suspected terrorists were killed in a fierce gunbattle with security forces. The encounter began when rebels in camouflage uniforms and armed with sophisticated weapons opened sustained fire on Borobekara police station and the adjacent CRPF camp at Jakuradhor in Jiribam district.

Hours later, suspected terrorists allegedly abducted six civilians, including women and children, from the same district, police had claimed. After this, bodies of two women and a child were recovered from Barak river in Jiribam on Saturday. Three other bodies, including that of a woman and two children, were found the night before.

This triggered violent protests in Jiribam as protesters attacked the residences of three ministers and 6 MLAs on Saturday. The state ministers whose residences were attacked by protesters included Sapam Ranjan, L Susindro Singh and Y Khemchand, an official said. After the attack, the government imposed a curfew and shut down the internet.
