The CEC reportedly asked officials to ensure that political parties and candidates avoid any act, deed or statement that could be considered prejudicial to the honor and dignity of women.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajeev Kumar on Friday condemned the indecent comments made against women leaders during the election campaign. Along with this, he asked the officials to ensure timely and strict action. The CEC’s directions were given during a review meeting with District Election Officers, Police Commissioners, SPs, Municipal Corporation Commissioners and Returning Officers ahead of the Assembly elections in Maharashtra.

The CEC reportedly asked officials to ensure that political parties and candidates avoid any act, deed or statement that could be considered prejudicial to the honor and dignity of women. Kumar also said that the personal lives of leaders and workers, which have no bearing on their public lives, should not be criticized and low-level personal attacks against political rivals should also be avoided.

The CEC asked the state election authorities to ensure that such actions and other violations of the Ethical Code of Conduct (MCC) are dealt with strictly and timely. Kumar also expressed hope that all candidates and party leaders will act in a manner that reflects respect for women in their speeches and public interactions. Last week, Maharashtra witnessed a major political uproar when Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant allegedly made derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction Shaina NC. Shaina NC is contesting the upcoming assembly elections from Mumbai’s Mumbadevi constituency.
