The court has given big relief to accused Umar Khalid, who is jailed on charges of conspiracy in the riots in the capital Delhi. Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has granted 7 days interim bail to Umar Khalid. According to the information, Umar Khalid had sought interim bail for 10 days to attend the wedding of his cousin brother and sister. However, Karkardooma Court granted interim bail to Umar Khalid for 7 days from 28 December to 3 January.
Who is Umar Khalid?
Umar Khalid is an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. Umar Khalid is accused of allegedly being the mastermind of the riots in Delhi in February 2020. Let us tell you that in 2020, riots broke out in Delhi during the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). 53 people were killed and more than 700 were injured in these riots. Delhi Police arrested Khalid in September 2020.
What is the allegation against Umar Khalid?
Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid has been accused by Delhi Police of conspiracy in the Delhi riots. Umar Khalid was arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Delhi Police has also filed a supplementary charge sheet against Umar Khalid under various sections including murder, attempt to murder, rioting, gathering of crowd, sedition, criminal conspiracy and many others.
Communal clashes broke out in north-east Delhi on 24 February 2020 following violence between supporters and opponents of the amendments to the citizenship law. After this, the Crime Branch and Special Branch of Delhi Police also interrogated Omar in the case of alleged conspiracy behind the riots. The police had also confiscated his mobile phone. Umar Khalid was arrested after 11 hours of interrogation. Before this, many petitions of Umar Khalid have been rejected.
