Amid criticism over cutting of age-old trees to build a flyover, Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma has claimed that some people have created an ‘unnecessary controversy’ to target the government’s development work. This will be the longest flyover in Assam with a length of 5.05 kilometers.

Guwahati . Amid criticism over cutting of age-old trees to build a flyover in this Assam town, Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma has claimed that some people have created an ‘unnecessary controversy’ to target the government’s development work. . The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Assam government over felling of nearly 2500-year-old trees for the construction of an over five-kilometre-long four-lane flyover being built at a cost of Rs 852.68 crore from Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati in the city.

This will be the longest flyover in Assam with a length of 5.05 kilometers. “For the last six months, I have been seeing that a particular section is trying to create unnecessary controversy over the flyover and the trees at Dighalipukhuri,” Sharma told reporters after visiting the construction site around midnight on Tuesday. He said that the second controversy is related to the speculation about shifting the statue of the pioneer of Assam literature, litterateur Lakshminath Bezbarua. He claimed that the flyover will pass over the statue and it will remain where it is now.

“I think these two controversies were created by some people who are targeting the government’s development work,” the Chief Minister alleged. Some people created unnecessary controversy that Dighalipukhuri trees will be cut, which is not based on facts. We have informed the Gauhati High Court about this.” He claimed that Sahitya Akademi Award winning Assamese litterateur Dr Hiren Gohain has created unnecessary controversy by saying that the statue will be removed. Sharma said, “People like Hiren Gohain do not want good things to happen in Guwahati. There is a solution for everything. The Assam government has issued a notification that if one tree is cut, 10 trees will have to be planted. I think some people love trees and some people want to put the government in an uncomfortable position.
