Under this scheme, a plan was made to generate electricity by burning waste. Timarpur-Okhla Waste-to-Energy Plant was introduced to eliminate mountains of waste. However, now this Green Revolution scheme itself has brought dangerous results for the common people. The report has revealed that the smoke from the waste to power project is suffocating 10 lakh people in Delhi. This scheme is not only providing electricity to the people but also serious diseases.

Dangerous chemicals coming out of the plant

In the report that has come out, it has been claimed that arsenic, lead, cadmium and many other deadly chemicals are coming out in the ash and smoke coming out from Timarpur Okhla Waste to Energy Plant. This chemical is quite dangerous for people’s health. The report also shows that people living in settlements around this plant are being exposed to toxic particles every day and are suffering from respiratory problems, asthma, cancer and skin related diseases.

Cases of asthma, cancer and skin diseases increased

According to the information, cases of asthma, cancer and skin diseases have increased in large numbers among the people living in the areas around Timarpur Okhla Waste to Energy Plant in Delhi. People of all ages, from children to old people, are falling prey to these diseases. The report said that the reports presented by the government also agree that the chemicals released from the Timarpur Okhla Waste to Energy Plant are harmful to health.

Children’s Park from the Ashes

Not only this, the ash generated from the Timarpur Okhla Waste to Energy Plant is being thrown in the open near settlements. After this, parks were built on top of these ashes for children to play. Now, due to throwing of ashes in the open, respiratory problems are increasing in children. The deadly metals present in the ash are having a negative impact on the development of children. Delhi Pollution Control Board and other institutions have failed to keep an eye on this plant.

Cadmium – 19 times more

Lead – 4 times more

Excessive exposure to lead affects a person’s nervous and reproductive systems. Apart from this, lead can also cause problems in the heart-immune system. Lead also affects the brain development and IQ level of children.

Cobalt – 3 times more

Due to excessive exposure to cobalt, you may suffer from cancer, skin and heart related problems. Along with this, problems related to lungs and eyes can also be seen due to cobalt.
