Former national team selector appointed as Delhi coach, suddenly gets big responsibility

Sarandeep Singh

Former India off-spinner and national selector Sarandeep Singh has been appointed as the new head coach of the Delhi senior team for the upcoming domestic season. He was appointed by the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the state unit. Bowling coach V Arvind and batting coach Bantu Singh will be his assistant coaches. Both of them have been in the same position since last year.

44-year-old Sarandeep Singh has played three Tests and five ODIs for India between 2000 and 2003. He has also been a national selector from North Zone under MSK Prasad. It is understood that the CAC comprising former Indian players Surinder Khanna, Nikhil Chopra and Anjali Malhotra had Sarandeep and former Delhi coach KP Bhaskar as the two choices for the top post. Last year’s coach Devang Gandhi will not be available this season due to personal reasons and has not applied for the coach’s post.

BCCI has set the cut off age for national selectors at 60 years

Former Indian batsman and Punjab’s only Ranji Trophy winning captain Gursharan Singh has been recommended for the post of chairman of the selection committee. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has a cut-off age of 60 years for national selectors while there is no such rule in state cricket. 61-year-old Gursharan has always been a part of the DDCA system from junior coach to senior selector and has also been a member of the CAC several times.

Men’s cricket team will have two mentors

The senior men’s team will have two mentors in a new position created by the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). Atul Wassan for the white ball and Robin Singh Junior for the red ball will perform this responsibility. Reema Malhotra will be the mentor of the women’s team. A senior DDCA official said on condition of anonymity that although DDCA president Rohan Jaitley has never interfered in any matter of cricket. He has given a free hand to the sub-committees. But his opinion on this issue will definitely be very important.
