Before the start of the Boxing Day Test, many speculations were being made about the playing-11 of the Indian team, but when the toss took place, it became clear that Shubman Gill was not included in the 11 players. Shubman Gill was not a part of Team India in the first Test due to a finger injury. After this, he got a chance in the Pink Ball Test played in Adelaide but could score only 31 and 28 runs. He also got out on a duck in Brisbane. With Rohit Sharma opening the innings and KL Rahul coming in at number three, Gill had to make way for the third specialist all-rounder Washington.
After the end of the day’s play, Nair said that Rohit will come up the batting order and there is every possibility that he will open the innings. This was the plan. Unfortunately, Gill had to be out because of the way things progressed. Nair said that he feels that in a situation like this, a young player wants to make his mark on the big day. He understands this is what the team needs and it is unfortunate. But he will not say that he has been dropped from the team. It is unfortunate that he could not make it into the team for this match.
Washington Sundar’s entry due to pitch
Explaining the reason for feeding Washington, he said that when a lot of decisions are taken and there is a process to take them, there is always dialogue and transparency. It’s very clear that we felt looking at the pitch that having Vashi in the bowling attack would give us variety, especially towards the end when the ball gets old.
The assistant coach said that after 50 overs it felt that this is an area in which we should improve. Felt Vashi could provide reinforcements along with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, especially with the way Travis Head and Alex Carey were scoring runs lower down the order. That’s why it felt that having an off-spinner in the team would help.
