TRAI has implemented new rules from October 1 to curb fake calls and messages. Now fake calls and messages coming to users will be blocked at the operator level itself. TRAI has once again hit the scammers hard and blocked more than 18 lakh mobile numbers and 680 entities in the last 45 days. The telecom regulator has shared this information from its X handle.
The telecom regulator has said in its X post that instructions have been issued to service providers to take strict action against spammers. Due to this, 680 entities have been black-listed in the last 45 days. Also, services of 18 lakh mobile numbers have been stopped.
More than 1 crore numbers closed
Even before this, the telecom regulator had blocked lakhs of mobile numbers due to their involvement in scam activities. Till now, the telecom regulator has taken action on more than 1 crore mobile numbers and terminated their services. Last month also, the telecom regulator, showing strictness, had blocked 3.5 lakh mobile numbers. DoT and TRAI together have been striving for a long time to provide spam free service quality to the users. TRAI has given strict instructions to telecom operators to block bulk connections, robotic calls and pre-recorded calls. In September also, Niaq had blocked 3.5 lakh un-verified SMS headers and 12 lakh content templates.
TRAI’s new rule
In the rule that came into effect from October 1, the telecom regulator has directed network operators to block messages containing URLs, APK links, OTT links using technology. The user will not receive any messages that contain any URLs. Users will receive messages containing links only from those institutions and telemarketers who have been whitelisted. Telemarketers will be able to whitelist messages containing URLs or other sensitive information such as OTPs based on message templates suggested by the regulator. Users will not receive marketing calls from institutions or telemarketers that are not whitelisted.

This rule of the telecom regulator applies to all mobile numbers through which marketing calls are made. If you make marketing or any kind of promotional calls from your personal number, the telecom regulator can block your SIM. To make marketing calls, connection has to be taken in bulk, for which the regulator has issued guidelines.
