485 crore fraud in one year
You will be surprised to know that in the year 2024-25, Indians have lost about Rs 485 crore due to online fraud in UPI payments. According to the data of the Finance Ministry, about 6 lakh 32 thousand incidents of fraud and cheating were registered through Unified Payments Interface i.e. UPI in 2024-25. These figures have been released by the ministry for the month of September.
Let us tell you that in the year 2022-23, about 27 lakh people have been cheated regarding online payment. Nearly people have lost Rs 2145 crore in this. Whereas in 2023-24, more than 13 lakh fraud cases were reported. A total fraud of Rs 1087 crore was done in this.

According to the DC report, a major reason behind the increase in these fraud incidents related to UPI is the rapid increase in the number of users. In this matter, the Finance Ministry had said on Tuesday that effective efforts are being made continuously to stop online fraud. The ministry said that to curb fraud, we have to strike a balance between promoting fintech innovation and ensuring regulatory compliance. This means that with the speed with which new innovations are happening in the world of technology, we will have to follow the regulatory rules to use them.
