Cyclone Chido wreaks havoc in France
Cape Town: Cyclone ‘Chido’ has wreaked havoc in the Mayotte region of France. The number of people who lost their lives here could be around 1,000. A top government official gave this information on Sunday. “I think hundreds of people have been killed, maybe the number reaches around a thousand,” Mayotte prefect Francois-Xavier Beauville told TV channel Mayotte L’A1ere. He said that it is ‘extremely difficult’ to give exact numbers after the widespread devastation caused by the severe tropical cyclone that hit the Indian Ocean islands on Saturday.
Mayotte is the poorest region of the European Union
Authorities had confirmed at least 11 deaths in Mayotte earlier on Sunday but said the number was expected to rise. Mayotte, located in the south-eastern Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, is the poorest island territory of France and the poorest region of the European Union.
Winds blew at speeds of more than 220 kilometers per hour
Chido caused winds of more than 220 kilometers per hour, damaging several houses in Mayotte, according to the French weather service. Mayotte has a population of more than 3 lakh people spread over two main islands about 800 kilometers off the east coast of Africa. At some places the entire area was destroyed. Local residents reported that many trees were uprooted and boats overturned or sank. At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he is closely monitoring the situation.
