Israeli army will maintain control of Syria's buffer zone in the near future: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israeli forces will remain in a “buffer zone” along the Syrian border, specifically on the top of Mount Hermon “until other arrangements are made.”

Netanyahu said that he had gone to the peak of Mount Hermon as a soldier 53 years ago, but in view of recent events, the importance of this peak for Israel’s security has increased further.

For the first time, the Israeli Prime Minister entered Syrian territory. Israel captured a part of southern Syria bordering the Israeli-occupied buffer zone ‘Golan Heights’, days after rebels ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Netanyahu visited the buffer zone with Defense Minister Israel Katz. Katz said he has instructed the Israeli military to deploy troops there soon, as they may have a long-term presence in the area.
