On Tuesday, there were intermittent heavy rains in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu, due to which residential areas and roads were flooded up to 2 feet and traffic was also jammed.
Many trains were canceled
Here, bus services were affected in many areas, while seeing the problem increasing, Southern Railway canceled 4 express trains including Chennai Central-Mysore Kaveri Express due to waterlogging. At the same time, many trains were diverted and some were stopped before Chennai Central Railway Station. For some trains the original station was transferred to suburban Avadi. Apart from this, many domestic flights were also canceled as passengers did not arrive.
IMD gave this information
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the low pressure area over the south-west and adjacent south-east Bay of Bengal moved from west to north-west on Tuesday evening and transformed into a depression. Further informed that the weather system was situated in the south-west of the Bay of Bengal at 5:30 pm today, about 490 km east of Chennai and 590 km south-east of Nellore.
Possibility of extremely heavy rainfall till October 17
“It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore near Chennai as a depression on the morning of October 17,” the weather department said in a bulletin. Is.” It further said, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the state on Wednesday with extremely heavy rainfall at a few isolated places. Squally wind speed reaching 60 kmph is likely over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts till October 17. IMD said the stormy weather is expected to gradually subside after Thursday.
Earlier, many parts of Andhra Pradesh had received heavy rains due to the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. This area had moved from the south-eastern part of the sea towards the west and north-west and was still there on Tuesday morning.
There is a possibility of heavy rain at some places even today
The IMD in its bulletin said that on October 16, “heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls at one or two places very likely over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Chennai districts is very likely. In view of the forecast, the government has issued an advisory on October 16. declared holiday in schools, colleges and government offices except for essential services in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpet districts. The government further said that state and central disaster response force teams were deployed at 26 places in Chennai and adjoining districts. Also, 219 boats are ready for rain-related operations in Chennai and other parts of the state. 931 relief centers are ready in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts and top IAS officials are monitoring the situation.
Work is underway to clear waterlogging at more than 300 places in the city, but barring a wall collapse and one person being injured, no rain-related untoward incident has been reported so far.
CM took stock of the situation
Here, Chief Minister MK Stalin along with state ministers inspected the rain water drainage work in flood affected areas and took the municipal corporation employees to a tea stall and had tea and biscuits for them. Stalin appreciated the services of the sanitation/civic workers and officials despite heavy rains and said he would stand shoulder to shoulder with the frontline workers. The Chief Minister also visited the State Emergency Control Center here.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also inspected several areas including the Narayanapuram lake near Velachery and officials said that excess rain water from the lake flows into the channels due to advance desilting work. He inspected the Integrated Command and Control Center of the Chennai Corporation, which is functioning from its headquarters, Ripon Building here, to review the ongoing work to deal with the situation arising out of the rains.
Chance of heavy rain for three days
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) said widespread rainfall was recorded over Tamil Nadu during the last 24 hours under the influence of the weather system. Further, the RMC said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the next three days, while extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places during the next two days (October 16 and 17). Is. On October 16, wind speed of 40 to 50 kmph, which can reach 60 kmph, is likely to prevail along the northern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu on October 16 and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
Where did it rain so much?
Furthermore, the RMC said that the southwest monsoon has withdrawn and northeast monsoon rains have started over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and coastal Andhra Pradesh. According to the RMC bulletin, Kudumiyamalai in Pudukottai district received 13 cm rainfall. Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district and Ennore in Chennai received 10 cm rainfall each. Most areas of the state have received monsoon rains, which ranged between 1 cm to 9 cm. This rainfall data is for a 24-hour period starting from 08.30 am on October 14 to 8.30 am the next day.
