A provost unit is a military police unit responsible for policing within a country’s armed forces. Accessible across the country without the need for any prefix, the helpline will cover all major telecom providers. Callers will have to provide details of their service and a brief description of the incident, after which the helpdesk will coordinate with the nearest Provost Police unit. Call management software will track cases to ensure follow-through.

The Indian Army has launched a 24/7 helpline service for soldiers and ex-servicemen following the custodial attack on an Army officer and his fiancee in Odisha. The helpline, 155306, aims to provide immediate assistance in cases of emergency or attack. Trained military police personnel, both men and women, will be deployed in the helpline. Calls to the helpline will be recorded, allowing efficient follow-up in each case. Through integrated coordination with provost units and civil authorities, the system will enable rapid responses across the country.

This helpline is designed for emergency situations only, except for non-crisis issues like land disputes and marital disputes. The initiative is part of the Army’s efforts to increase support and security for its personnel amid concerns over increasing attacks on service members. The Army had raised concerns with the Odisha government over the custodial attack on September 15, which came after an Army officer and his fiancee were surrounded by miscreants in Bhubaneswar on September 14. The case was later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
