Indian Railways has achieved a historic feat by transporting more than 3 crore passengers in a single day on November 4, 2024. The Railway Ministry has issued a statement giving this information. On November 4, Indian Railways carried a record 180 lakh suburban passengers as well as 120.72 lakh non-suburban passengers including 19.43 lakh reserved passengers and 101.29 lakh unreserved passengers, making it the highest passenger count in a single day in 2024. The total passenger traffic on this day crossed 3 crores, setting a new benchmark.

According to the ministry, around 6.85 crore passengers traveled through Indian Railways scheduled trains to Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand between October 1 and November 5. This impressive number of travelers exceeds the combined populations of countries such as Australia and New Zealand, highlighting the sheer scale of travel during this period. The Ministry also highlighted that this achievement reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to meet the growing demand during the peak festival season, making travel easier and more accessible for all.
In view of the huge rush in passenger traffic during the festive season, Indian Railways has operated an additional 4,521 special trains carrying 65 lakh passengers between October 1 and November 5, 2024. The statement said that these additional services have played an important role in facilitating smooth travel during the ongoing Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath Puja celebrations. These special efforts of Railways ensured that lakhs of passengers could reach their destination comfortably. This achievement reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to meet the growing demand during the peak festival season, making travel easier and more accessible for all.

To meet the increased travel demand during the festive period from October 1 to November 30, Indian Railways had earlier announced a total of 7,724 special trains, an increase of 73 per cent compared to last year’s 4,429 special train services. Indian Railways has operated an average of 175 special trains per day in the last four days to ferry passengers to their destinations for Chhath Puja.
